Security Guard
Employer: Dis-Chem Pharmacies Limited
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking a reliable and vigilant Security Guard to provide professional security services in accordance with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001, as amended. The successful candidate will be responsible for protecting company assets, property, employees and customers by maintaining a safe and secure environment, preventing criminal activity and responding appropriately to security incidents and emergencies.
Minimum Requirements
Essential:
- Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate.
- Grade C PSIRA accreditation.
- At least 3 years of general security experience within the retail industry, including shopping centres, warehouses or similar environments.
Advantageous:
- At least 1 year of previous experience in a similar security role.
Key Responsibilities
- Remain vigilant and continuously monitor the surrounding environment for suspicious activities or potential security threats.
- Conduct regular random patrols of the premises to maintain visibility and reduce security risks.
- Monitor and control access to the premises for employees, customers, suppliers, contractors and visitors.
- Verify and regulate pedestrian and vehicle access to ensure only authorised persons enter the site.
- Investigate and report signs of damage, unlawful entry, theft or suspicious activity to management.
- Maintain a visible security presence to deter criminal activity, theft, property damage and personal injury.
- Provide professional, courteous and helpful service to customers, employees, suppliers and visitors.
- Conduct authorised searches of staff, suppliers and company merchandisers in accordance with company procedures.
- Carry out daily personnel frisking and searches where required.
- Conduct thorough vehicle searches in line with security procedures.
- Maintain and accurately complete all security registers, occurrence books and other required documentation.
- Verify staff purchases and declared goods and complete the necessary cancellation procedures.
- Supervise and monitor refuse removal according to Dis-Chem standards.
- Protect company property and assets from theft, dishonesty, malicious behaviour and other causes of loss.
- Remain at the designated security post throughout the shift unless authorised otherwise.
- Maintain positive customer service relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Report unusual or suspicious behaviour involving employees, customers or suppliers.
- Remain alert and observant during opening and closing procedures.
- Ensure doors and windows are properly secured at the end of each operating day.
- Check that water taps are switched off where applicable.
- Monitor CCTV cameras and alarm systems and operate emergency or detection equipment when required.
- Conduct ongoing surveillance during night shifts or when working alone by patrolling the premises and monitoring security systems.
- Investigate suspicious activities and maintain secure and lawful access to the premises.
- Immediately report suspicious incidents to management and provide detailed written reports as required.
- Contact police, emergency services and other relevant authorities when necessary.
- Provide accurate verbal and written information to law enforcement and emergency personnel when required.
- Continue monitoring the surroundings after an incident or crisis and report any changes that may escalate the situation.
- Submit detailed reports following security incidents, emergencies or other significant events.
- Assist emergency response teams by alerting first responders, managers, clinic staff and other relevant personnel.
- Maintain order during evacuation procedures and at designated assembly points.
- Provide clear directions and take appropriate action to help protect lives and property during emergencies.
- Provide ongoing security advice, safety warnings and guidance to support compliance with security procedures.
- Identify breaches in security measures and take appropriate action.
- Assess situations quickly and respond correctly to security incidents and emergencies.
- Remain calm, alert and decisive during high-pressure situations.
- Follow Dis-Chem and industry-standard procedures when responding to dangerous situations.
- Contact police immediately during serious incidents such as armed robberies, violent attacks or assaults involving dangerous weapons.
- Keep accurate records of unusual occurrences, observations and daily security activities.
- Enforce site rules and regulations to help prevent criminal activity.
- Perform other authorised duties, including receiving calls, responding to messages and completing departmental errands where required.
Skills and Competencies

- Good knowledge of PSIRA requirements and security procedures.

Special Conditions of Employment
- Must be registered with PSIRA.
- Must hold Grade C PSIRA accreditation.
- Must be a South African citizen.
- Must pass MIE screening, including criminal and credit checks.
- Valid driver's licence and own reliable transport required where applicable.
- Valid PDP required when deployed as a driver.
