Dis-Chem Pharmacies has an opportunity for a Security Guard - Pretoria to provide professional security services in accordance with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001, as amended. The successful candidate will help protect Dis-Chem employees, customers, property and assets by maintaining a safe and secure environment, identifying suspicious activities, preventing security incidents and responding to disturbances in line with legislation, company procedures and industry best practices.

Minimum Requirements

Essential:

  • Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate.
  • Grade C PSIRA accreditation.
  • At least 3 years of general security experience in the retail industry, such as shopping centres, warehouses or similar environments.

Advantageous:

  • At least 1 year of previous experience in a similar security position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Remain vigilant and alert to identify suspicious behaviour, security breaches and potential criminal activity.
  • Conduct regular random patrols of the premises to maintain visibility and reduce security risks.
  • Monitor and control access to the premises for both pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Verify and regulate entry to ensure only authorised individuals gain access.
  • Investigate and report signs of damage, unlawful entry or suspicious activity to management.
  • Maintain a visible security presence to deter theft, criminal activity, property damage and personal injury.
  • Provide professional, friendly and courteous assistance to customers, employees, suppliers and visitors.
  • Conduct access control searches of staff, suppliers and company merchandisers in accordance with procedures.
  • Conduct daily personnel searches and thorough vehicle inspections where required.
  • Maintain and complete all security registers, occurrence books and related records accurately.
  • Verify and cancel staff purchases and declared goods according to company procedures.
  • Supervise and monitor refuse removal activities in accordance with Dis-Chem standards.
  • Protect company property and assets from theft, dishonesty, malicious behaviour and other potential losses.
  • Remain at the designated security post throughout the shift unless authorised otherwise.
  • Maintain excellent customer service relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Report unusual or suspicious behaviour involving employees, customers or suppliers.
  • Remain vigilant during opening and closing procedures.
  • Ensure doors and windows are secured at the end of each day.
  • Check that water taps are switched off where applicable.
  • Report suspicious incidents to management immediately and provide detailed written reports as required.
  • Contact police and emergency services when necessary and provide accurate verbal or written reports.
  • Continue monitoring the area after incidents or emergencies and report any developments that could worsen the situation.
  • Submit detailed reports following security incidents, emergencies or other crises.
  • Monitor alarm systems and CCTV cameras and operate emergency or detection equipment when required.
  • Conduct ongoing surveillance during night shifts or when working alone by patrolling the premises and monitoring CCTV and alarm systems.
  • Ensure that only authorised and lawful access to the premises is permitted.
  • Assist emergency response teams by alerting first responders, managers, clinic staff and other relevant personnel.
  • Maintain order during evacuations and at assembly points.
  • Provide clear directions and take decisive action to help protect lives and property during emergencies.
  • Provide security advice, safety warnings and guidance to support compliance with security procedures.
  • Identify potential breaches in established security measures and take appropriate action.
  • Assess situations quickly and respond correctly to security threats and emergencies.
  • Remain calm, observant and alert during high-pressure situations.
  • Follow Dis-Chem and industry-standard procedures when responding to dangerous situations.
  • Contact law enforcement immediately during serious incidents such as armed robberies or assaults involving dangerous weapons.
  • Keep accurate notes of unusual incidents, observations and daily activities.
  • Enforce site rules and regulations to help prevent criminal activity.
  • Perform additional authorised duties, including receiving calls, responding to messages and assisting with departmental errands where required.

Skills and Competencies

  • Good knowledge of PSIRA requirements and security procedures.
  • Knowledge of fire emergencies and relevant health and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

  • Additional fire, emergency response or health and safety training.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Must be registered with PSIRA.
  • Must have Grade C PSIRA accreditation.
  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Must pass MIE screening, including criminal and credit checks.
  • Valid driver's licence and own reliable transport required where applicable.
  • Valid PDP required when deployed as a driver.
