An opportunity is available for a Plennegy Research: General Worker based in Oudtshoorn. The successful candidate will support plant cultivation and seed production activities, including seed sowing, seedling management, transplanting, pollination, harvesting and seed processing.

Job Purpose

The Plennegy Research: General Worker will perform essential agricultural and research-support activities throughout the plant cultivation cycle. The role includes preparing growing materials, managing seedlings, assisting with greenhouse and field operations, supporting crossing and pollination activities, harvesting plant material and processing seeds to support successful plant growth and seed production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Count and package seeds accurately according to required procedures.
  • Soak, wash and dry seedling trays.
  • Prepare seedling mix for filling seedling trays.
  • Fill seedling trays with the required seedling mix.
  • Sow seeds according to the approved sowing list.
  • Move seedling trays from the germination room to the seedling house after 72 hours of sowing.
  • Arrange seedling trays correctly within the seedling house.
  • Prepare seedling mix for planting pots.
  • Fill planting pots with seedling mix.
  • Move filled pots into greenhouses and arrange them correctly.
  • Connect drippers to planting pots.
  • Move seedlings from the seedling house to greenhouses and field locations.
  • Prepare planting holes in the field.
  • Transplant seedlings according to instructions and established procedures.
  • Identify flowers at the correct development stage on female plants for crossing activities.
  • Assist with emasculation according to the crossing book provided by the breeder.
  • Perform pollination activities in accordance with the crossing book.
  • Harvest crossed fruits according to the breeder's instructions and crossing records.
  • Harvest self-pollinated fruits from plants selected by the breeder.
  • Extract seeds from harvested fruits.
  • Wash and clean seeds following the required fermentation period.
  • Dry processed seeds according to established procedures.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work areas in greenhouses, seedling houses and field areas.
  • Handle plants, seed, trays, pots and agricultural materials carefully.
  • Follow all instructions, production procedures and safety requirements.
  • Assist with other general agricultural and research activities as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • National Senior Certificate / Grade 12 is essential.
  • Previous experience in the agricultural industry will be advantageous.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks requiring fine motor skills, including handling, fingering and precise hand movements.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods when required.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to frequently lift and move items weighing up to approximately 4.5 kg.
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to speak and hear effectively.
  • Strong visual abilities, including close and distance vision, colour recognition, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Ability to adjust focus when performing detailed tasks.
  • Willingness and ability to work in open-air environments.
  • Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and outdoor environments.
